Something interesting is happening in the tech world right now. On one side we have the hyperscalers — the big cloud giants concentrating all the data, all the compute, and all the power in a few hands. On the other side we have the movement toward self-reliance: people pulling their workloads back home, self-hosting, and insisting on owning their own infrastructure.
Right between these two poles sits a third place — small hosting providers. And maybe that's exactly where the answer lies.
The giants' logic
Hyperscalers are built for scale. Their advantage is indisputable: enormous capacity, a global network, and advanced services at a price no small player can match per unit. But centralization also brings a set of downsides that more and more companies are starting to feel.
Cloud repatriation — moving workloads away from the big clouds — is no longer a niche phenomenon. It became obvious when 37signals (the people behind Basecamp) announced they'd saved around a million dollars a year by leaving the cloud and running their own infrastructure. On Reddit's r/sysadmin (thread), the topic is likewise full of practitioners describing how complexity, unpredictable bills, and lock-in eventually eat up much of the benefit.
The price of self-reliance
The opposite pole — full self-reliance — has its own price. Hosting everything yourself takes time, expertise, and round-the-clock responsibility for operations, security, and updates. For a small company or a team without dedicated infrastructure staff, that can quickly become a burden that outweighs the savings.
This is where the tension lies: you want control and freedom, but you don't necessarily want to own the entire engine room yourself.
The role of small providers
Small hosting providers sit exactly in that gap between the giants and full self-sufficiency. What's interesting is that they often do something different from the big players: they build on open technology.
Because a small provider can't compete on raw scale or on closed proprietary services alone, they win instead on openness and flexibility. Open-source infrastructure means that, as a customer, you're not locked into a proprietary ecosystem — you can take your VM, your database, or your setup with you to another provider, or bring it home to your own rack.
That's the very essence of portability: the technology is open enough that you can genuinely move freely between "self-hosted" and "hosted," without having to start over.
AI too
The same dynamic is now repeating itself in artificial intelligence. The big model providers act as closed silos — you use their API but own neither the model nor the data flow around it. With open-weight models (like those from the DeepSeek family), you can suddenly run advanced models on your own infrastructure, or at a smaller provider that hosts them openly.
Several small European players already offer exactly that: open-source models hosted on their own infrastructure in EU countries, where data sovereignty falls under European law rather than a foreign jurisdiction.
For companies handling sensitive data, this isn't just a niche trick — it's often an outright data-sovereignty requirement.
The bridge between two worlds
So what's the point? Small hosting providers act as a bridge between two extremes:
- From the giants, you inherit convenience: someone else looks after the machines, the security, and the operations.
- From self-reliance, you inherit freedom: open technology that you genuinely own or can carry with you.
You get the agility of both worlds without having to fully pick a side. You don't need to build your own data center to escape lock-in — you just need to choose a partner that builds on technology you could have run yourself.
At a time when centralization has never been stronger — in both cloud infrastructure and AI — perhaps it's precisely the role of small players to keep the door open between the world of the giants and your own.
